Best fuel-efficient cars in Kenya under 1M, 1.5M and 2M
Last updated · Cada car guides
The most fuel-efficient cars commonly sold in Kenya are small-engine Japanese hatchbacks and hybrids: the Toyota Passo and Nissan March (about 1.0–1.2 litre), the Toyota Vitz, Mazda Demio and Honda Fit (1.0–1.5 litre), and hybrids such as the Toyota Aqua, Honda Fit hybrid and Nissan Note e-Power, which save the most in town traffic. Smaller engines also pay less excise duty (20% up to 1500cc). The tables below show which of them fit KES 1M, 1.5M and 2M budgets as fresh imports, using KRA's CRSP values.
| Engine size to target | 1500cc or less (also the lowest excise band) |
|---|---|
| Best in town traffic | Hybrids (Aqua, Fit hybrid, Note e-Power) |
| Lowest purchase cost | Passo, March, Vitz |

Choosing between them
- Mostly short town trips: a hybrid saves the most fuel.
- Long highway trips: a small petrol engine is nearly as economical and simpler to maintain.
- Check the hybrid battery's health on any used hybrid.
- Locally used cars on Cada can cost less than the import estimates; compare both.
