Hybrid and electric cars in Kenya: are they worth it?
Last updated · Cada car guides
Hybrids such as the Toyota Aqua, Prius, Honda Fit hybrid and Nissan Note e-Power are common in Kenya and use less fuel in town traffic, but they pay the same import duty and VAT as petrol cars, with excise set by engine size. Fully electric cars are taxed lower in KRA's July 2025 template (25% import duty and 10% excise instead of 35% and 20–35%), but you need reliable home or work charging. The main risk on any used hybrid or EV is the battery's health, so have it tested before you buy.
| Hybrid duty | 35% duty like petrol; excise by engine size (KRA has no separate hybrid rate) |
|---|---|
| Electric duty (KRA template) | 25% import duty, 10% excise |
| Best use for hybrids | Stop-start town traffic |

Before buying a used hybrid or EV
- Ask a garage with hybrid diagnostic tools to check the battery's state of health.
- For an EV, check the real range on a full charge and where you will charge every night.
- Kenya Power offers an e-mobility tariff for EV charging; check the current rates and conditions with Kenya Power.
Common questions
Is a hybrid cheaper to import than a petrol car?
Not because it is a hybrid. KRA has no hybrid tabulation, so the duty depends on the CRSP value and engine size. Only fully electric cars get lower rates.
