How to sell your car in Kenya safely and for the best price

Last updated · Cada car guides

To sell your car in Kenya, price it against similar cars on sale, gather the logbook, your ID and KRA PIN and the service records, clean it and take clear daylight photos, list it where buyers search, meet buyers in a safe public place, and only start the NTSA transfer on eCitizen once the full payment has cleared in your account. The Traffic Act requires you to notify NTSA of the sale within 7 days, which the eCitizen transfer does.

Steps

  1. Get a fair price range from similar cars on sale and a valuation.
  2. If the car has a loan, get the settlement figure and discharge letter from the lender.
  3. Service and clean the car; fix cheap faults that put buyers off (bulbs, wipers, warning lights).
  4. Take photos in daylight: front, back, both sides, interior, dashboard with mileage, engine bay.
  5. Write an honest advert with year, mileage, engine, gearbox, service history and known faults.
  6. Meet buyers in daylight at a busy place; go to the test drive with them and keep the keys.
  7. Sign a written sale agreement with both IDs, the price, mileage and the date and time of handover.
  8. When the money has cleared, start the transfer on eCitizen and hand over the car and logbook.

Common questions

What happens if I don't transfer the car after selling it?

You remain the registered owner on NTSA records, so fines, accidents and offences can be traced to you. Complete the transfer at handover.
